Child Pool Drowning Prevention

In the United States, the leading cause of death among children aged 1-4 years is drowning. For children ages 5-14, it is the second leading cause of death behind automobile accidents. Florida ranks as one of the highest states with these incidents. It’s important that parents take extra precaution so their child can avoid becoming a victim.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), made a few recommendations for pool owners and parents in their Pool Safety campaign in 2014:

- Always make sure pools are fenced
- Stay alert and keep a watchful eye on children
- Never leave children unattended, even for a short period of time
- Appoint a responsible adult to supervise children
- Learn CPR
- Learn how to swim
- Teach your child how to swim
- Keep children away from drains and pipes
- Check to make sure the pool contains drain covers that are in compliance with federally regulated safety standards

Among the groups at most risk for drowning are African-American children aged 5-19. According to data from the USA Swimming foundation, 7 in 10 African-American children cannot swim. Sixty percent of Hispanic children and forty percent of white children in the U.S. also do not know how to swim. The fact of the matter is, if children don’t know how to swim, they have a higher risk of drowning.  Low-cost swimming lessons exist, and are available to children throughout many municipalities in Florida and the U.S. through parks and recreation departments.
