Cam Newton Involved in Car Accident

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a two-vehicle crash in close proximity to the team’s stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Newton was driving the posted speed of 35mph when the driver of another vehicle pulled out in front of him. Since Newton was not at fault in the incident, he will face no charges. The accident left Newton with two fractures in his lower back and he was held overnight at Carolina’s Medical Center for observation and testing.

Due to his injuries, Newton may be unable to play Sunday. If it’s ruled that he cannot play, Derek Anderson is expected to take his place as the team’s starting quarterback. The team was unsure if Newton would remain in Charlotte for his recovery or head to his hometown Atlanta, Georgia with them. Coincidentally, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered the same injury earlier in the season. It was ruled that Romo had to miss one game to recuperate.

Newton was recently named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 226 yards, running 83 and four touchdowns in a win against the Saints on Sunday. On Wednesday, Newton was discharged from the hospital and said to be sore but in good spirits.
