Back To School Safety for Drivers

The school year has officially begun for most of us around America making it the perfect time to remind ourselves how important it is to stay safe when we’re on the road. A lot of us likely drive through school zones or at the very least areas where kids will be walking, so let’s take a minute to catch up on the latest back to school safety tips for motorists.

When sharing the road with school buses, the most basic law states that when a school bus has made a stop to load or unload children, all drivers must hold back from passing the bus to get ahead. Most children who are victims of bus-related accidents are pedestrians ages 4-7 who were hit by the bus or by drivers who attempted to illegally pass a stopped school bus. Because of this, it’s important to be aware of the laws and why they are in place. All 50 states require that traffic in both directions stop on undivided roadways when children are entering or exiting the school bus and of course, always be alert. Staying alert on the road should be your number one priority when it comes to safety. When you are alert you will know when children pedestrians are walking so you can be prepared, especially since children are the least predictable pedestrians and the hardest to see. The same rule applies to children bicyclists.
