According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the main source of car accident fatality reporting in the United States, 37,261 people died in fatal car accidents nationwide in 2008. Of those lives lost, 363 car accident fatalities occurred in Massachusetts. These numbers reflect a substantial 16% decrease in fatal accidents from the 434 Massachusetts fatalities recorded in 2007. In 2008, there were 42 motorcycle fatalities, 75 pedestrian fatalities, 164 alcohol-related fatalities (this includes both cars and motorcycles), and 20 fatalities involving a large truck.
In Boston, alone, there were 37 people involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents. Two pedestrians were killed by motor vehicles as well. Countless others suffered severe injuries as a result of car accidents in Boston.
