The Safety Drawbacks of Smart Cars

Smart cars and very small cars in general come with its advantages: Greater gas mileage, great visibility, easy to handle, and easier to maneuver turns and parking. However, there are some things you want to watch out for if you own or want to own one of these vehicles. Being a small car on the road comes with its disadvantages. Here are a few drawbacks for small cars when it comes to safety:

Hard to be seen
Drivers in larger vehicles may not see you, especially if you are in their blind spot or are too closely behind them. If you are driving right next to a large vehicle, you should either drive up more in front of them or get behind it so that it will not accidentally merge into your lane and sideswipe you as that can cause a serious accident.

Clearance
Drivers of smaller cars have to be more aware of road hazards such as uneven pavement, mud puddles, debris, and other dangers because smaller cars tend to have much lower clearance than large cars. These road hazards not only may disrupt the car and potentially cause an accident, but it can do damage to the car. Therefore you should be aware of how high your car is off of the ground and whether or not you can clear any road hazards you see.

Protection
It’s no surprise you’d probably be safer in a large spacious SUV compared to a tiny compact smart car. While smart cars have had improved crash test results over the years, there’s no protection like that of a larger vehicle. Vehicle size and weight have a huge influence on the outcome of a crash.
